What an exciting time to be involved in the profession of pharmacy! The responsibilities of the
Pharmacy Technician is becoming increasingly demanding and rewarding!
A changing landscape…..
The Canadian population is aging and requires more from our health care system. Medications are
playing a greater role in treating and preventing illness and diseases. There is an explosion of new drugs
on the market. The Canadian public is more knowledgeable and is demanding more information about
their medications. Because of these demands on the health care system and with the changes in the
delivery of health care, pharmacists are required to shift more attention to patient-centered, outcomes-
focused care, in order to optimize the safe and effective use of medications. Pharmacy Technicians
work alongside our pharmacists providing support in the provision of safe medications for Canadian
patients. In today’s workplace, Pharmacy Technicians provide an integral, critical level of support for
our pharmacists.
What do Pharmacy Technicians do?
Pharmacy Technicians work under the supervision of a pharmacist in community pharmacies, hospital
pharmacies, managed health care facilities or clinics. Some of the duties that Pharmacy Technicians
perform are assisting the pharmacist in labeling and filling prescriptions, assisting patients in dropping
off and picking up prescriptions, medication ordering, prepare medication inventories and compound
medications.
What is Regulation?
The regulation of Pharmacy Technicians is a national initiative which has resulted in the creation of a
new healthcare professional, the Regulated Pharmacy Technician.
The National Association of Pharmacist Regulatory Authorities has developed and completed an
assessment of the National “Professional Competencies for Canadian Technicians at Entry to Practice”.
This foundational document was developed for a number of specific purposes:
The CCAPP (Canadian Council for Accreditation of Pharmacy Programs) is the national body responsible
for establishing accreditation standards, setting policy, and managing the accreditation process. The
Pharmacy Technician Programs at Robertson College’s Calgary and Winnipeg Campuses have both been awarded
Provisional Accreditation for a three year term.
