About the Nursing Assistant Diploma Program

Nursing Assistants, Unit Assistants, and Nursing Unit Assistants are indispensable to hospitals, care facilities, regional health authorities, and health service agencies.  They play an integral role in assisting patients with mobility and hygiene, providing palliative care and implementing support plans for individual patients.

Program Learning Outcomes

Our Nursing Assistant program is divided into 2 components – students will receive training to become a Health Care Aide as well as a Health Unit Clerk.  Upon completion of the Nursing Assistant program, graduates will receive diplomas for Nursing Assistant, Health Care Aide and Health Unit Clerk.

Health Care Aide Training

  • Learn to provide individualized and age-appropriate client-centred care
  • Gain problem-solving and time management skills when carrying out caregiving procedures
  • Learn to support clients experiencing cognitive and/or mental challenges
  • Gain hands-on training on how to move, position and transfer clients
  • Learn how to communicate effectively with clients, family members and other health care team members

Health Unit Clerk Training

  • Learn how to navigate around the Health Care Delivery System
  • Learn how to arrange client admissions and discharges
  • Be able to arrange for client tests and receive results
  • Prioritize requests and manage health unit operations
  • Learn to transcribe and process doctor’s orders

Nursing Assistant Program Practicum

Students are required to participate in a 12-week practicum (6 weeks as a Health Unit Clerk, 6 weeks as a Health Care Aide) as part of their program.
