Alumni Spotlight: From Two Jobs and Night Classes to Healthcare Professional – Jennifer Guamos’ Story

quick answer

Meet Jennifer Guamos, a Robertson College Medical Office Assistant graduate who proved that with the right support, you can build the career you want, even when life is pulling you in a dozen directions. Jennifer Guamos wasn't looking for inspiration when she moved to Canada. She was looking for stability.

As a young mother who had to leave school early in the Philippines to provide for her son, she knew what hard work meant. In Winnipeg, that meant a full-time cashier position at Canadian Tire and part-time private home care work, whatever it took to make ends meet.

But somewhere between the checkout counter and caring for clients, a close friend saw something Jennifer hadn’t quite let herself consider: the possibility of finishing what she’d started years ago. “My friend encouraged me to continue my studies, even after a challenging start,” Jennifer shares. “My desire to finish my studies and build a better future never faded.”

With her partner’s support, Jennifer made a decision that would change everything. She was going to go back to school, while keeping both jobs.

Making It Work

The logistics alone seemed impossible. Full-time work. Part-time work. Being a mom. And now, school? But Robertson College’s Medical Office Assistant program offered her something she wanted: flexibility. The online format meant Jennifer could study after her shifts, on weekends, whenever she could carve out time.

“The support from instructors and the flexibility of online classes made it manageable,” Jennifer explains. “I gained strong administrative and communication skills, as well as a better understanding of medical terminology.”

The program wasn’t easy, balancing everything required serious time management and determination. There were late nights and early mornings. There were moments when it felt like too much. But Jennifer kept going.

“Balancing work, studies, and personal life was my biggest challenge,” she admits. “With the support of my partner, my family, and strong time management, I was able to complete the program successfully.”

The Payoff

After months of juggling schedules and pushing through exhaustion, Jennifer completed her practicum at a medical billing company. Then came the offer that made it all worth it: a full-time position at the same company.

Today, Jennifer works full-time in medical billing and no more splitting herself between multiple jobs, no more wondering if she’d ever get to use her education. She’s doing exactly what she set out to do.

“Since graduating from Robertson College, I’ve gained a lot more confidence in my skills and qualifications, which has opened up many exciting opportunities in medical offices and clinics,” she says. “I’m especially grateful that I was offered a position at the office where I completed my practicum.”

One thing Jennifer didn’t expect? How fulfilling it would feel to understand the important role Medical Office Assistants play in patient care and clinic operations. It’s not just about the administrative work, it’s about being part of something that matters.

What She’d Tell You

For anyone wondering if they can really go back to school while managing everything else life throws at them, Jennifer’s advice is straightforward: “Stay focused and don’t give up, even when life gets busy. Take advantage of every resource the college offers and believe in your potential.”

She knows firsthand that it’s possible to work, parent, and study, all at the same time. It’s not easy, but with the right program and support system, it’s absolutely doable.

“If you’re thinking about enrolling, go for it. It’s a life-changing experience, and with determination and support, you can achieve your goals just like I did.”

Jennifer’s story isn’t about overnight success or perfect circumstances. It’s about a mom who moved to a new country, worked hard, and decided she wanted more for herself and her family. And then she went out and made it happen.
