What is Online Learning? Online Education vs Distance Education

a person finding more about Online learning is on the rise. Read our blog to learn what is online learning and the difference between Robertson Online programs and our virtual classroom what online learning is

Online learning has become one of the most popular forms of education in our changing world. The global pandemic is an undeniable reason for this, but there are many other benefits to online learning other than our current safety. It reduces transportation (and carbon emissions) which is better for our environment and it also gives students more flexibility to fit learning into their day-to-day life.

We may be a little biased, but we think online learning is great and we love talking about it. In this post you’ll learn what is online learning, understand the difference between distance education and online education and take away some tips to keep yourself focused and organized while learning remotely. As our new normal changes, we hope this post is informative and helpful, especially if online learning is new to you.

Why online learning?

Our workforce is shifting to a digital landscape and agility, adaptability and flexibility have become increasingly more important. Whether they’re working in a traditional office or remotely, new professionals need to have the skills to handle whatever job environment is thrown at them.

We built our Robertson Online programs with that in mind, to make sure you’re career-ready, even if you’re not learning on campus. Whether you want to start your career, build on your current skills or change careers, our online programs hold you accountable and ensure your success while giving you the flexibility you need.

We’re here to share the benefits of online learning so when it comes time for you to choose a program, you’ll be able to make an informed decision.

What’s the difference between online education and distance education?

At Robertson, we offer two types of online learning and they’re actually quite different. Let’s dive into each format and its benefits.

Robertson Online

Robertson Online programs are fully remote and are designed to give students the freedom to live their life while they study. Here are some defining aspects of the programs.

  • Flexible learning. With Robertson Online, you decide when and where you study. There are no set class times – instead, all your course materials are available on our online learning platform, Brightspace. This is where you can access notes and course materials, complete quizzes and assignments, and connect with peers and instructors through online discussion boards. As long as you meet your weekly goals, you can study at your leisure. This gives students the flexibility to live their life while they study.
  • Supportive community. When you learn online, you’ll have instructor and peer support available the moment you need it. Brightspace helps you collaborate with your peers using discussion boards, instant messenger or video. You can chat about assignments or catch up if you’re looking for some social connection. Your instructors are all available for virtual office hours if you have questions and you can message them through Brightspace as well. You’ll also have the same admissions, career and mental health support as our on-campus learners.
  • Industry-leading instructors. Along with our on-campus programs, you’ll be taught by industry professionals who bring real-life experience and insight into the classroom. Our instructors (and programs) are up-to-date with industry trends to ensure you leave truly prepared to hit the ground running in your career.
  • Industry practicum. Most online programs have a mandatory industry practicum in your chosen field. Many practicums will be held online, though some students may have the opportunity for an in-person experience. Whether it’s remote or in an office, students will gain valuable industry experience with a mentor and build their skills in a real work environment.
  • Micro-courses. If you don’t want to take a full diploma program, you can take a shorter micro-course and add a certificate to your resume. These are great courses if you’d like to build on your current skills or upskill in your industry. All of the content is available to you to complete at your own pace and once you’re done, you get to add a Robertson E-Course Certificate to your resume.

Virtual Classroom

While Robertson Online is a more traditional form of online education, we also offer a form of distance education. We call this our virtual classroom.

During the pandemic, we shifted all of our on-campus programs to the virtual classroom so students could continue working towards a meaningful career without worrying about their health. There’s one main reason the virtual classroom is different from Robertson Online.

The virtual classroom has a structured learning format. In the virtual classroom, students continue their education on their regular class schedule. They join online lectures at set times and participate in class discussions using Brightspace. While Robertson Online students learn more independently, students in the virtual classroom have a more structured learning experience.

The nice thing about the virtual classroom is all other aspects are very similar to Robertson Online.

  • Students are still able to connect with peers and instructors through instant messenger, video chat or Brightspace discussion boards.
  • All our instructors are industry professionals with valuable experience they bring to the classroom.
  • Most programs have a mandatory practicum component that allows you to apply the skills, theories and concepts learned in class in an entry-level work environment. Students can choose from a self-procured practicum or a practical project where they can showcase their skills.
  • Whether they’re learning on-campus or in the temporary virtual classroom, students will have access to the same student services including admissions, career services and mental health support.

How to succeed at online learning

If you’ve never studied remotely before, online learning may seem daunting. You may be wondering how you’ll stay on top of your assignments if there isn’t the same structure. Maybe you’re worried about feeling alone or not being able to ask questions. Or perhaps you’re unsure if you’ll be able to stay organized and understand the material.

We’re here to tell you that it’s possible and you can succeed. We’ll help you stay accountable with your weekly goals and your instructors are always available to answer questions and support you when you need.

If you’re wondering how to get organized when studying online, here are some of our top tips:

  • Buy a calendar or organizer, or if you’d like to save a couple bucks, download our custom planner. This is a great way to keep track of due dates, assignments and other important dates.
  • Take intentional and organized notes. Summarize the most important points in your own words and highlight the key information. You’ll thank yourself come exam time.
  • Mute your distractions. Pick a study space that’s comfortable and limits distractions. If you can stay focused, you’ll be more productive and will work more efficiently.
  • Take breaks. Break time is just as important as study time. Changing your space and giving your mind a break will help it recharge so you’re ready to go for your next study session.
  • Talk to your peers. Your peers are in the exact same boat as you, so if you’re looking for some support, they’re a great resource. Take the opportunity to bond with your classmates and set up video study calls. You can help each other stay motivated and on track.

If you can make slight adjustments to your habits and routine, you’ll have no problem transitioning to online learning (and becoming good at it!).

Is online learning a good fit for you?

Before registering for a Robertson Online program, it’s important to consider if online learning is right for you. Here are some questions to ask yourself to help you make your decision.

  • Do you prefer independent learning?
  • Is your schedule really busy, in which case would you benefit from having the flexibility to study when you want?
  • Do you think you’d be able to organize your time and keep track of your assignments?
  • Do you have a comfortable study space where you can learn remotely?
  • Would you rather take a shorter course than a full diploma program?

If you answered yes to most of these questions, Robertson Online would be a good fit for you. If you’re someone who likes a bit more structure, maybe one of our regular diploma programs in our virtual classroom would be a better fit.

88% of our grads are working in a meaningful career right after graduation. It doesn’t matter if you prefer to learn online or in our virtual classroom – you can be in your career in less than a year. The choice is yours!

You may find yourself asking the question: how many online courses should I take? We’ll give you some things to consider including your current schedule, financial situation, interests and tell you how Robertson Online gives you the freedom to learn while you live.
