Administrative Assistants provide critical support to businesses of all sizes within various industries. Individuals with added bookkeeping skills are even more valuable as they are able to provide accounting and bookkeeping support in addition to their administrative tasks.

Program Overview

Robertson College’s Administrative Assistant / Bookkeeper diploma program is designed to give you an understanding of office procedures, bookkeeping, and Sage computerized accounting software.  As a graduate of this program, you will be able to obtain an entry-level position as an Administrative Assistant or Bookkeeper.

  • Gain basic knowledge of common office procedures and develop professional business skills necessary to communicate in a dynamic workplace
  • Learn bookkeeping basics and how to perform day-to-day financial transactions, including general journal entries, accounts payable and receivables and the operation of petty cash
  • Transition the concepts of manual bookkeeping to a computerized accounting environment
  • Learn proper typing techniques and improve your keyboarding accuracy
  • Learn to perform functions common to all Microsoft Windows applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Topics of Study

Administrative Office Procedures - 20 Hours

Introduces students to common office procedures, such as human relations; organization structure and office layout; office technology; front-line reception; aspects of business communication specific to the office professional; and record keeping.

Bookkeeping - 80 hours

Introduces students to basic bookkeeping practices and procedures. Students gain experience with typical bookkeeping functions, including recording journal entries, posting to ledgers, and preparing a variety of statements.

Business Communications - 60 hours

Focuses on the essential skills for basic business writing and professional interaction. This course also emphasizes the role technology plays in the workplace to enhance communication.

Career Preparation - 40 hours

Introduces students to strategies for a successful job search, interview and career management.

Customer Service - 20 hours

Provides a foundation for customer service, and focuses on building lifelong customer relationships through the development of positive customer care approaches.

Introduction to Human Resources - 20 hours

Provides a general overview of the human resource functions that assist an organization deliver value through proper management of the employee life cycle.

Keyboarding - 20 hours

Improves touch typing skills on a keyboard with a focus on improving speed and accuracy. This course increases job efficiency and understanding of work station ergonomics.

MS Office Applications - 80 hours

Prepares students to perform functions common to all Microsoft Windows applications. Elements include the ability to create and manipulate Word, Excel, or PowerPoint applications, modify the display of toolbars and other on-screen elements, use online help, and perform file management, editing, formatting and printing functions common to most Windows applications.

Sage Accounting - 60 hours

Introduces students to the popular Sage computerized accounting software that many small to medium sized businesses use today.

Administrative Assistant / Bookkeeper Practicum

Valuable workplace experience is gained during the compulsory 4-week full-time practicum where you will be working alongside industry professionals.

He has over 7 years of experience as an accounting and payroll professional in a variety of small and corporate businesses and he possesses a Bachelor of Commerce degree.. Aasil brings with him new fresh ideas and looks forward to forming caring and nurturing relationships with his learners while he encourages them to explore their learning through experiential learning model. Aasil has led workshops in a wide range of alternative education settings including spreading student privacy awareness. His enthusiastic personality and exuberant sense of humor is a welcomed addition to the programs at Robertson College.
