Practicum

The practicum is an essential part of a student’s program. It is not merely a graduation requirement; it is an extension of the in-class learning. The practicum asks you to apply the skills, theories, and concepts that you learned in your classes in an entry-level work experience situation.

Practicum must begin and end within the dates outlined in your program schedule and enrolment contract. Practicum is a full-time, unpaid commitment and is presently available in 2 formats:

  • A self-procured practicum
  • A practical project

Core Program Courses

All students must complete the core course requirements including the Student Practicum/Capstone course which is to be completed at the end of the program. 

 

Administrative Office Procedures - 20 Hours

Introduces students to common office procedures. Topics such as human relations; organization structure and office layout; office technology; front-line reception; aspects of business communication specific to the office professional; and record keeping are covered.

Business Communications - 60 Hours

Provides students with the knowledge and tools to communicate effectively and professionally in the workplace. Students are introduced to essential skills in writing, speaking, formal presentations and the use of technology to enhance workplace communication.

Customer Service - 20 Hours

Provides a foundation for customer service, and focuses on building lifelong customer relationships through the development of positive customer care approaches.

MS Office Applications - 80 Hours

Prepares students to perform functions common to all Microsoft Windows applications. Elements include the ability to create and manipulate Word, Excel, or PowerPoint applications, modify the display of toolbars and other on-screen elements, use online help, and perform file management, editing, formatting and printing functions common to most Windows applications.

Keyboarding - 20 Hours

Improves touch typing skills on a keyboard with a focus on improving speed and accuracy. This course increases job efficiency and understanding of work station ergonomics.

Career Preparation - 40 Hours

Introduces students to strategies for a successful job search, interview and career management. Students understand who they are, the skills they offer, what to expect from professional employment and what employers expect of them.

Practicum/Capstone

Students have the option of either a 4-week full-time practicum placement or a 4-week 160-hr capstone course. 

A practicum is where the student works full-time in the industry alongside industry professionals for four weeks. A capstone is an authentic, work-based project that integrates and synthesizes the program learning outcomes to demonstrate mastery of the skills and concepts required for employment in the industry.

Specialized Program Courses

In addition to the core program courses, students must complete specialized course requirements for one of three specializations: Event Planning & Hospitality, Executive Assistant and Human Resources Coordinator.

Event Planning & Hospitality

This specialization consists of:

Event Management - 60 Hours

Develops skills and knowledge in administration, event planning and management, risk management planning and human resource management.

Hospitality Sales & Marketing - 40 Hours

Focuses on the hospitality market, applying a practical approach to hotel and restaurant sales and marketing.

Wedding Planner - 40 Hours

Provides a step-by-step approach in introducing students to a career as a wedding planner. Trains students to work with clients and negotiate contracts with vendors.

Event Coordinator - 60 Hours

In this course, students attain valuable knowledge in becoming a skilled, educated, professional event coordinator. The course provides instruction in areas such as event coordination, marketing plan implementation, risk management implementation, human resource coordination and professionalism.

Digital Marketing Fundamentals - 60 Hours

Business Writing - 60 Hours

Introduces students to the fundamentals of business writing and provides students with the knowledge and techniques to hone their writing skills for the business environment. The course covers the structure and form of business documents in addition to language and writing style. 

Executive Management - 80 Hours

Introduces students to the knowledge, skills and tools needed to excel as an executive assistant in a professional business environment. 

Employment Legislation - 20 Hours

Examines federal and provincial laws that regulate the workplace and best practices to ensure employment standards and guidelines are established. 

Recruitment and Selection - 40 Hours

Explores the goals, strategies and tools for successful recruitment and selection processes.

Introduction to Human Resources - 20 Hours

Provides a general overview of the human resource functions that assist an organization deliver value through proper management of the employee lifecycle.

Provides students social management skills to guide employees through a transition period and effectively manage change within an organization.

Recruitment & Selection - 40 Hours

Explores the goals, strategies and tools for a successful recruitment and selection process.

Employment Legislation - 20 Hours

Examines the federal and provincial laws that regulate the workplace and best practices to ensure that employment standards and guidelines are established.

Compensation & Benefits - 40 Hours

Provides an understanding of the management of compensation and benefits as part of an organizational strategy to attract and retain employees.

Occupational Health & Safety - 40 Hours

Introduces students to strategies adopted by both employees and organizations to ensure a safe and hazard-free workplace.

Labour Relations - 40 Hours

Reviews labour relations processes, laws and their implications for the workplace.

Employee Learning & Development - 40 Hours

Introduces students to the process of employee orientation and onboarding. Students also learn about the promotion and implementation of employee career development and progression strategies that contribute to the success of an organization.
