Program Overview

The e-Commerce Professional program will provide students with a deep understanding of business operations, online sales strategies and is able to use various platforms to conduct digital sales or conversions on a website. Students will learn to gather and analyze data using a variety of web and social media tools such as Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Data Studio, Search Console, Trends, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and Instagram Business. Students will also learn about e-commerce platforms such as Shopify, Infusionsoft, WooCommerce, PayPal, WePay, and Stripe. This program will allow graduates to:

  • Understand the field of e-commerce
  • Manage e-commerce projects
  • Enhance the user experience
  • Describe e-marketing strategies
  • Use digital analytics 
  • Manage business operations
  • Display professional work ethic

 

This program is licensed under Alberta’s Private Vocational Training Act (PVTA) and Manitoba’s Private Vocational Institutions Act (PVIA).

Introduction to e-Commerce

Course Description

This course introduces students to the field of e-commerce and provides students with the opportunity to understand the significance and impact of e-commerce on the economy and society. Students will be introduced to the history of e-commerce, relevant e-commerce models, standards of practice, legislation and regulatory guidelines.  Students will explore emerging issues and trends within the discipline.

Business Operations

120 hours

Course Description

This course introduces students to business operation concepts related to e-commerce.  Students will become familiar with the use of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems and how they are used to support e-commerce. Students will also develop an understanding of electronic transactions, shopping cart and product delivery, supply chain management, and security strategies. Students will also learn about e-commerce platforms such as Shopify, Infusionsoft, WooCommerce, PayPal, WePay, and Stripe.

Business Communication

60 hours

Course Description

This course provides students with the knowledge and tools to communicate effectively and professionally in the workplace. Students will be introduced to essential skills in writing, speaking, formal presentations and the use of technology to enhance workplace communication.  

Project Management

80 hours

Description

This course will provide students with the skills, knowledge and tools to manage and execute projects efficiently and successfully.

Digital Analytics

60 hours

Course Description

This course introduces students to the data acquisition and marketing analytics used in e-commerce.  Students will learn to gather and analyze data using a variety of web and social media tools such as Google Analytics, Tag Manager, Data Studio, Search Console, Trends, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and Instagram Business.  Students will develop the capacity to use data acquisition and marketing analytics to inform business planning.

Marketing Strategies

Course Description

This course introduces students to the scope of e-commerce marketing strategies.  Marketing strategies such as email marketing, social media, blogging, video marketing, storytelling, and developing campaigns will be explored.  Students will be given the opportunity to develop hands-on skills in each of these areas.

e-Marketing

60 hours

Course Description

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of marketing as it applies to e-commerce.  In this course, students will develop an understanding of marketing theory, market research, entrepreneurship, marking process and techniques, and market planning.  Students will be introduced to strategy development, entrepreneurship and personal business planning.  This course introduces students to the importance of effective marketing and entrepreneurship skills.

Website Development

80 hours

Course Description

This course introduces students to the skills necessary to design, create and enhance Web pages for e-commerce use.  Students will develop skills to create and publish Web pages that include text, hyperlinks, images, tables, frames, forms, sound and video.  Students will develop basic HTML and CSS skills.  Students will be given the opportunity to apply their learning by developing their own e-commerce website with a linked mobile platform.  Students will be introduced to programming languages such as Javascript and Python.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

80 hours

Course Description

This course introduces students to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) language and techniques.  Students will develop a conceptual understanding of SEO principles, develop an understanding of the use of keywords, and understand how to optimize search rankings.  Students will develop the capacity to use SEO analytics to inform business planning.

User Experience Design

40 hours

Course Description

This course introduces students to effective e-commerce design principles.  Students will be introduced to User Experience (UX) Design and User Interface (UI) Design and how these fields interact to develop effective and engaging user experiences. Students will develop an understanding of the principles of UX and UI, become familiar with the concept of accessibility, and develop an understanding of how to implement effective e-commerce design strategies.

Customer Relations Management

40 hours

Course Description

This course provides a foundation for customer service, and focuses on building life-long customer relationships through the development of positive customer care approaches specific to e-commerce.

Trends and Disruptions in e-Commerce

20 hours

Course Description

In this course, students will explore trends and disruptions in the e-commerce industry and have an opportunity to research and present on one trend or innovative practice of their choice to further explore an area of interest.

Internet Law and Legislation

20 hours

Course Description

In this course, students will learn about internet laws and legislation pertaining to e-business. They will explore fair dealings, intellectual property rights and Copyright and discuss the role and role of patents, trademarks and domain names. This course will also touch on cyber crime as related to online sales and marketing.

Remote Work Essentials

20 hours

Course Description

In this course, you will learn strategies for working remotely and leading a remote team. You will discuss how to participate in and facilitate remote meetings, while exploring tools and technology to stay connected and productive. In addition, you will connect with other parents who are working remotely and share challenges and tips for working from home with children.  This course will also touch on strategies for maintaining mental wellness and it will explore how resilience is often born from crisis.

Career Preparation

40 hours

Course Description

This course introduces students to career preparation strategies.  Students will be introduced to job search strategies, interviews and other career management strategies.

Practicum

120 hours

Description

The Practicum experience is composed of an integrated work and learning experience.  Students are expected to complete a practical experience in a professional setting. This course is designed to help students integrate academic learning with the realities of the work environment.

Practicum

The practicum is an essential part of a learner’s program. It is both a graduation requirement and an extension of in-class learning. The practicum asks you to apply the skills, theories, and concepts that you learned in your classes in an entry-level work experience situation. 

Practicum must begin and end within the dates outlined in your program schedule and enrolment contract. Practicum is a full-time, unpaid commitment, and is jointly-procured — where you work directly with our Practicum team to obtain a training-related placement.  Your active participation with our Practicum team in the search for your practicum placement will enhance your career development skills, industry networking opportunities, and professional communication skills.
