Robertson’s Health Care Aide Program prepares students for a rewarding career working with a range of patients, including the elderly, disabled and injured. Students in the program are trained in several ways to support patient care and conclude their program with a six-week work practicum.

This course offers a brief introduction to the healthcare system in Manitoba. Topics include the roles of individual members of the health care team, multiculturalism, ethical and legal considerations, problem-solving and organization of workload.
This course provides students with an overview of searching for employment opportunities, creating professional and targeted resumes and cover letters, and preparing for an interview. Students will learn about job hunting online, the application process for job aggregators, and discover the potential benefits of networking to help secure a job in their field.
This course examines the process of communication and develops interpersonal communication skills. Concepts such as basic human needs and helping relationships are reviewed in terms of their impact on interpersonal relationships. Theory and practice of skills such as observing, reporting and documentation are included.
This course reviews the stages of growth and development throughout the life cycle and presents definitions of family units and the role expectations of family members. The issue of domestic violence is also addressed.
This course introduces concepts and issues facing older adults in today’s society. The focus is on understanding the aging process including the physical and psychosocial changes that affect the lives of older adults. Community resources and programs for seniors are identified, and the role of the Health Care Aide in providing care for clients in community settings is reviewed.
Principles of medical asepsis, infection control and the prevention of the spread of communicable diseases are discussed. Safety principles and handling of oxygen and oxygen delivery equipment are reviewed. Accident and fire prevention and the role of the health care aide and unit clerk in an emergency are stressed.
This course provides the learner with the knowledge and skills required to assist patients/residents/clients with activities of daily living (ADL). Topics include body mechanics, mobility, bedmaking, hygiene, and grooming.
Students will gain additional knowledge and skills required to assist patients/residents/clients with activities of daily living (ADL). Topics include nutrition, elimination, comfort and pain, rest and sleep, and care of the surgical patient/resident/client.
This course offers students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they learned in the theory portion of the program in a clinical laboratory setting.
This course addresses role change and other tasks associated with long-term care. Rehabilitation and promotion of independence are stressed. Other topics include mental health and illness, informal caregiving, institutionalization, and palliative and end-of-life care. Common health problems will be discussed.
This course describes the care provided to clients in the community. The differences in caring for clients in community settings and the special skills needed by health care workers in the community are to be highlighted. Topics include home safety, meal planning, and safe food handling, assisting with medications in the home, and home emergencies.
This course offers students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they learned in the theory portion of the program in a clinical laboratory setting.
