Lifting Students Up: How Robertson College, the Edmonton Oilers Fans, and United Way Are Helping Kids Start School Strong
quick answer
It starts with a backpack.
For many kids across Edmonton, that backpack is more than a school supply — it’s a symbol of possibility. But for families facing financial hardship, even basic supplies can feel out of reach.
That’s where the community steps in.
For many children in our community, back-to-school season brings excitement, new beginnings — and in some cases, quiet worry. Without access to basic school supplies, some students start the year at a disadvantage, facing barriers to learning before they even step into the classroom.
That’s why Robertson College is proud to be part of a meaningful collaboration with the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation (EOCF) and United Way of the Alberta Capital Region, coming together to support the Tools for School program. This initiative, powered by the Oilers 50/50 raffle at the March 18, 2025 “Women in Sport” game, helps ensure students across Edmonton and surrounding areas have the essential supplies they need to succeed.
At its heart, this collaboration is about more than pens, paper, or backpacks — it’s about community. It’s about lifting up the next generation, giving them the confidence to learn, grow, and dream big.
“The Edmonton Oilers have a long history of giving back to the community, and we’re excited to join them in supporting local students through the 50/50 program,” says Bill Ciprick, CEO of Robertson College. “At Robertson College, we believe education is the foundation for opportunity, and this initiative directly helps remove a barrier for students in need across Edmonton.”
The Oilers 50/50 is one of the most successful charity raffles in professional sports, raising millions each year for community-focused programs. By supporting Tools for School, this initiative will help ensure thousands of local students receive the supplies they need to thrive in the classroom — and beyond.
