Program Overview

The Health Care Aide Bridging program is a certification process that is tailored for those who are working as uncertified Health Care Aides in a public healthcare setting in Manitoba.

This program is licensed under Manitoba’s Private Vocational Institutions Act (PVIA).

Students who are currently working as uncertified Health Care Aides in private sites may qualify for our HCAC or HCA programs.

Hybrid Learning

  • A mix of online and on-campus learning.
  • Enjoy the flexibility of remote learning without sacrificing valuable in-person training under the guidance of your instructors.
  • You only come to the campus for scheduled in-person labs! The theory portion of the program is delivered online through Brightspace, our online learning platform.
  • 16 hours per week of online learning
  • 24 Hours of structured hands-on lab sessions on campus
  • 80 Hours of clinical practicum that is completed at the end of the program

Admission Requirements

  • Have 300 hours of work experience within the past 12 months as an uncertified Health Care Aide at a public healthcare setting
  • Verification letter from employer with detailed job description or completed Employer Verification Form
  • English language proficiency IELTS Level 6 or CLB Level 7,7,7,7. Students may be enrolled with a IELTS Level 5.5 or CLB Level 6,6,6,6 provided they successfully complete the Intensive English Academic 4 course by the end of the HCA program. This course is offered at no additional cost.
  • Grade 12 as verified by high school diploma or transcript for standard admission / Grade 10 as verified by high school transcript, 19 years of age and minimum of 1 year out of high school for mature admission
  • Successful completion of micro-course:
    • 7-day Health Care Support Worker micro-credential from Assiniboine Community College, Red River Polytech or University College of the North; OR
    • An approved course from a health service delivery organization that meets the minimum requirements of the 7-day micro-credential 
  • Photo ID

Graduation Requirements

  • Minimum passing grade for all courses 75%
  • Proof of meeting current required vaccinations as per employer policy.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Clear Adult Abuse Registry Check (AAR)
  • Clear Child Abuse Registry Check (CAR)
  • Current First Aid/CPR Level “C.”
  • Food Handling Certificate
  • Personal Health Information Act education as per employer policy
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) training

 

Learners are responsible for costs associated with vaccinations, Criminal Record Checks and Child Abuse Registry Checks. Food Handling, NVCI, First Aid / CPR Level “C” training will be facilitated and paid for by Robertson for students who are not yet certified. These are additional to the program and are not reflected in the program hours described.

The Health Care Aide Bridging program curriculum has been set by Shared Health and approved by the Private Vocational Institutions Branch.

Career Opportunities

Students who successfully complete this program will have the knowledge and skills to work at certified Health Care Aides, Home Care Attendants or Personal Support Workers in Manitoba.

Graduates will be eligible to continue or obtain employment at a public health site including hospitals or a private long-term care facility, personal care home or home care.

Topics of Study

Health Care Delivery (32 Hours)

This course offers a brief introduction to the health care system in Manitoba.

Topics include the roles of individual members of the health care team, multiculturalism, ethical and legal considerations, problem-solving and organization of workload.

Interpersonal Relationships (32 Hours)

In this course, learners will examine the process of communication and develop interpersonal communication skills.  Concepts such as basic human needs, barriers to communication and the helping relationship are reviewed in terms of their impact on interpersonal relationships.  Theory and practice of skills such as observing, reporting and documentation are included.

Growth and Development (32 Hours)

This course reviews the stages of growth and development throughout the life cycle and presents definitions of family units and the role expectations of family members. The issue of domestic violence is also addressed. 

Topics covered include: Introduction to Human Growth & Development; Infancy & Toddlerhood; Childhood; Adolescence; Adulthood; The Families in Which We Live; and Family Violence.

Introduction to Gerentology (32 Hours)

This course provides an introduction to concepts and issues facing older adults in today’s society.  The focus is on understanding the aging process including the physical and psychosocial changes that affect the lives of older adults. Community resources and programs for seniors are identified, and the role of the Health Care Aide in providing care for clients in community settings is reviewed.

Safety in Health Care Settings (32 Hours)

Principles of medical asepsis, infection control and the prevention of the spread of communicable diseases are discussed.  Safety principles and handling of oxygen and oxygen delivery equipment is reviewed.  Accident and fire prevention and the role of the health care aide and unit clerk in an emergency are stressed.

Learners will review W.H.M.I.S., Occupational Health & Safety, as well as Fire Safety and Oxygen Safety.

Activities of Daily Living 1 (32 Hours)

This course provides the learner with the knowledge and skills required to assist patient/resident/clients with activities of daily living (ADL). Topics include body mechanics, mobility, bed making, hygiene and grooming.

Activities of Daily Living 2 (32 Hours)

This course provides the learner with additional knowledge and skills required to assist patient/resident/clients with activities of daily living (ADL).  Topics include nutrition, elimination, comfort and pain, rest and sleep, and care of the surgical patient/resident/client.

Long Term Care (32 Hours)

This course addresses role change and other tasks associated with long-term care. Rehabilitation and promotion of independence are stressed. Other topics include mental health and illness, informal caregiving, institutionalization, and palliative and end-of-life care. Common health problems will be discussed. 

Caring for Clients in the Community (32 Hours)

This course describes care provided to clients in the community. The differences in caring for clients in community settings and the special skills needs by health care workers in the community are to be highlighted. Topics include home safety, meal planning and safe food handling, assisting with medications in the home, and home emergencies.

Practicum

The practicum is an essential part of a learner’s program. It is both a graduation requirement and an extension of in-class learning. The practicum asks you to apply the skills, theories, and concepts that you learned in your classes in an entry-level work experience situation. 

Practicum must begin and end within the dates outlined in your program schedule and enrolment contract. Practicum is a full-time, unpaid commitment, and is jointly-procured — where you work directly with our Practicum team to obtain a training-related placement.  Your active participation with our Practicum team in the search for your practicum placement will enhance your career development skills, industry networking opportunities, and professional communication skills.
