Program Overview

The Accounting Technician certificate program will help you develop proficiency as an entry-level accounting professional with
courses covering accounting fundamentals, key business skills, and popular computerized accounting software. Learners
will gain technical accounting skills and how learn how to prepare financial statements, budgets, tax-returns, payroll and
financial records using modern accounting software including Quickbooks and Sage50.

Topics covered will include manual bookkeeping and accounting processes, financial statements, budget and financial
record preparation as well as development of written and oral business communication skills. You will also gain essential
administrative and support skills to ensure the smooth operation of any office.

Admission Requirements

All applicants educated outside of Canada or in a country not on the test exempt list are expected to meet the English language proficiency requirement. 

  • Grade 12 graduation or equivalent
    • Consumer/Essential Mathematics 40S or equivalent
      • International students with credentials from India
        are eligible with completion of Grade 10
        Mathematics (as part of Indian curriculum).

 

  • English Language Requirement – one of the following:
    • IELTS 6.0 Academic, no subscore below 5.5
    • TOEFL (IBT) 68; no skill score below 17 Listening; 16 Speaking; 18 Reading; 18 Writing
    • CanTest 4.0, no skills score below 4.0
    • PTE Academic 50
    • CAEL 50

Practical Applied Culture and Employment (PACE) is a co-requisite for the program. This course can be completed online in conjunction with your studies at Robertson.

Exceptions may be considered. Please contact our International Admissions team for more information regarding admission requirements.

Topics of Study

Bookkeeping (60 Hours)

This course introduces basic bookkeeping practices and procedures. Students gain
experience with typical bookkeeping functions, including recording journal entries,
posting to ledgers, and preparing a variety of statements. They will develop an
understanding of controls in bookkeeping and understand the importance of
accuracy in bookkeeping.

Business Communication (60 Hours)

Communication remains an essential skill sought by employers, regardless of
discipline or field of study. Using a practical approach, students will develop strong
oral, written, body language and presentation skills to become effective business
communicators. Students will strengthen writing, speaking, reading, listening skills,
as well as use technology to communicate professionally. In addition, students will
use communication technology tools to support operations in the workplace.

Business Math (20 Hours)

This course introduces students to the business mathematics used within the
accounting professional. Students will review simple calculations and perform more
complex calculations including decimals, fractions, percentages, and ratios.
Students will use business math to calculate currency conversion, compound
interest, trade discounts, markups and markdowns, break-even, and other business
calculations.

Business Taxation (40 Hours)

This course introduces students to Goods and Service Tax (GST) principles and
regulations. Students will develop the skills to complete accurate tax returns,
develop the skills to correct tax errors and omissions, and understand the implication
of GST reporting errors on an organization.

Career Preparation (40 hours)

This course provides students with an overview of searching for employment
opportunities, creating professional and targeted resumes and cover letters, and
preparing for an interview. Students will learn about job hunting online, the
application process for job aggregators, and discover the potential benefits of
networking to help secure a job in their field.

Elements of Costing (40 Hours)

This course introduces students to the importance of costing as a source of information for organizational decision-making. Students will develop skills in performing costing systems which include labor, material, overhead, and other variables. They will learn how to report on costing and provide information on organizational performance.

Financial Transactions (40 Hours)

This course introduces students to financial transactions. Students will develop the skills to process customer and supplier transactions and record these using cash books and ledgers. They will develop the skills to identify the accuracy of customer and supplier documents and learn to deal with outstanding debt.

Intermediate Accounting (80 Hours)

This course introduces students to the basic elements of double-entry bookkeeping and the standards used to process and report financial information to users. Students will develop an understanding of how to draft financial documents related to the purchase and disposal of assets, depreciation, and period-end adjustments.

Internal Controls (40 Hours)

This course introduces students to the importance of the accounting cycle and implementing internal controls within the profession. Students will explore different methods of internal controls such as documentation, the use of regulations, policies, and requirements. They will also become familiar with the external audit process. Students will develop the skills to identify unethical and illegal acts and to report these behaviors.

Introduction to Accounting Technician Profession (40 Hours)

This course introduces students to the Accounting Technician (AT) profession. Students will develop an understanding of the role of the Finance Department, and the roles and responsibilities of the AT professional. They will develop an understanding of data and information security, ethical conduct and corporate responsibility as it relates to financial management.

Microsoft Office Applications (80 Hours)

This course will prepare students to perform functions common to all Microsoft Windows applications. Elements include the ability to create and manipulate Word, Excel, or PowerPoint applications, modify the display of toolbars and other on-screen elements, use online help, and perform file management, editing, formatting and printing functions common to most Windows applications.

Personal Taxation (40 Hours)

This course introduces students to personal taxation principles and regulations. Students will develop an understanding of deductions, capital gains, losses and taxable income. They will develop the skills to prepare and submit personal tax returns.

Professionalism (40 Hours)

Being a professional in a professional workplace ensures a positive first impression, successful interpersonal relationships, and a lasting reputation. This course provides training in leadership skills that ensure adaptability to a continually changing work environment. Topics covered include initiative, teamwork, and continuous learning.

Quickbooks (60 Hours)

This course introduces students to one of the most commonly used accounting software – QuickBooks. This course utilizes a diversity of companies, business situations and realistic source documents to simulate real-life accounting transactions.

Sage Accounting (60 Hours)

This course introduces students to one of the most common accounting tools used – Sage 50. By the end of the course, students should be able to navigate Sage 50 and use it for accounting applications.

Practical Applied Culture and Employment - PACE

PACE is vital to career success. The PACE Program is designed to help students unlock the important communication skills necessary for academic and workplace success in the Canadian context. Students will learn techniques and skills for effective reading and listening fluency, impactful written and oral communication, and professional interpersonal interactions. The program also is designed to help students develop cross-cultural competency that is critical for academic and workplace success in a multicultural society like Canada.

This is an Assiniboine Community College program delivered on-campus at Robertson’s campus in Winnipeg.  Assiniboine ensures the ongoing quality of the program and conducts all admission and enrollment into the program. 

This program follows the ACC Academic Policies.  All credentials and transcripts for this program will also be issued by ACC.  For day-to-day inquiries and assistance, students enrolled in this program may contact Robertson as their first point of contact.

  • Obtain your advanced diploma within 8 months from Assiniboine Community College at Robertson College. 
  • With successful completion of this affiliated program, students will be eligible to apply for a Post Graduate Work Permit allowing you to work anywhere in Manitoba.
