Medical Clinical Unit Clerks (MCUCs) provide administrative support for a wide variety of tasks. From managing medical billing and health records to communicating with patients and other medical facilities, they ensure that medical clinical units or medical offices are operating smoothly without any interruption to staff and patients.

The Medical Clinical Unit Clerk program prepares graduates to work as administrators in a variety of healthcare settings including hospitals, healthcare institutions and community-based healthcare clinics.

Anatomy, Physiology & Medical Terminology

This course introduces students to the anatomy and physiology of the various body systems. Students will develop an understanding of the structure and function of these systems, as well as basic medical terminology and common diseases and disorders of each.

Billing & Coding

This course introduces students to billing within the provincial systems. Students will develop the skills to complete billing processes for patients, the Ministry of Health, Workers’ Compensation, health spending accounts, RCMP, out-of- province insurance claims, and private insurance. Students will also learn to use industry software.

Business Communications

60h

Communication remains an essential skill sought by employers, regardless of discipline or field of study. Using a practical approach, students will develop strong oral, written, body language and presentation skills to become effective business communicators. Students will strengthen writing, speaking, reading, listening skills, as well as use technology to communicate professionally. In addition, students will use communication technology tools to support operations in the workplace.

Career Preparation

This course introduces students to career preparation strategies. Students will be introduced to job search strategies, interviews and other career management strategies.

Customer Service

This course provides a foundation for customer service, and recognizes that clients and colleagues can all be considered customers. This course focuses on building customer relationships through the development of positive customer care approaches that includes respect for diversity and ensures organizational integrity.

Health Unit Clerk Procedures

Office Procedures for MCUC introduces students to managing the healthcare office environment. Students will explore how to run a medical office and understand the daily, weekly and yearly tasks involved in this process. Students will develop the skills to use initiative and problem-solving to ensure a safe and well-functioning medical office.

Introduction to Healthcare System

60h

This course introduces students to the Canadian healthcare system. Students will develop an understanding of the different governance models, and roles and responsibilities within the healthcare system. Students will also develop an understanding of the competencies required by medical office professionals.

Introduction to Medical Procedures

60h

This course introduces students to the medical procedures facilitated within medical clinics. Students will become familiar with medical procedures and tests, laboratory procedures, and basic pharmacology. Students will also learn about health and safety procedures related to medical procedures and testing.

Keyboarding

Students will learn the fundamental skills to become proficient in keyboarding techniques.

Medical Records

This course introduces students to the record-keeping practices in the hospital and medical offices. Students will develop an understanding of related legislation and recognize the importance of confidentiality of records. Students will develop the skills to use common medical records software.

Medical Transcription I

This course introduces students to medical transcription within the doctor’s office. Students will develop an understanding of common report structures and develop the skills to use transcription machines.

Medical Transcription II

This course provides an overview of medical transcription facilitated by Medical Unit Clerk professionals. Students will develop the skills to process orders across the medical profession including doctors’ orders, diagnostic imaging orders, commentary therapies, nursing interventions and a variety of other medical practitioners. Students will be introduced to common hospital software and technologies used by the regional hospital systems.

Microsoft Office Applications

This course will prepare students to perform functions common to all Microsoft Windows applications. Elements include the ability to create and manipulate Word, Excel, or PowerPoint applications, modify the display of toolbars and other on-screen elements, use online help, and perform file management, editing, formatting and printing functions common to most Windows applications.

Professionalism

40h

Being a professional in a professional workplace ensures a positive first impression, successful interpersonal relationships and a lasting reputation. This course provides training in leadership skills that ensure adaptability to a continually changing work environment. Topics covered include initiative, teamwork and continuous learning.

Scheduling

40h

This course introduces students to the concept of scheduling appointments. Students will explore issues that can make scheduling complicated and how to apply software and technologies.

Workplace Health & Safety

20h

MCUCs should have and create a safe work environment while engaging in self-protection to maintain their own health and well-being. Students will learn how to set up and maintain a safe work environment when working alone and/or with clients and colleagues. Universal precautions and infection control techniques will also be covered. Students will demonstrate ergonomically sound work practices.
