Discover How the Workforce Team Can Support You On Your Career

Introducing the Workforce Team

You’ve enrolled in your program, packed your backpack and started getting the hang of your courses. Then you decide it’s time to apply for your first career position. Where to begin?

Look no further than the Workforce Team – the ultimate career support for Robertson learners.

Workforce is the team that assists learners with finding a meaningful practicum and career development opportunities for their growth. When you connect with us, we truly work together as a team, functioning as a stepping stone from school to graduation, your career and beyond. Our services are free and any current Robertson learner or alumni can come to us for career guidance – no matter how long ago you graduated.

So how exactly can our team support you? Let’s dive in.

Career Preparation

Here’s how we can help you get ready to hit the ground running in your career.

Resume and Cover Letter Editing

Never written a resume or cover letter before? No problem. You can book an employment strategy search session to get some guidance on where to start. Once you have a first draft, our team can proofread and coach you through any improvements to make your skills shine.

Interview Prep

When it comes to interviews, there’s a lot more to them than the questions. We’ll walk you through proper business etiquette including how to introduce yourself, dress as well as important soft skills. We can also help you practice by hosting a mock interview with potential questions (both ones you’ll be asked and ones you can ask your interviewer) and give you tips on how to answer professionally. Since interviewing has changed during the pandemic, we’ll walk you through the remote interview process and how to adapt.

Job Search

Searching for relevant jobs can seem overwhelming but we’re here to support you through it. We’ll tell you about different online job search engines and tips for applying through those platforms. Along with that, we’ll teach you about keywords and how you can use specific ones to search for positions that meet your career goals (that way you won’t have to waste time sifting through postings that don’t interest you).

Lifelong Career Support

Career support doesn’t end when you leave Robertson. Even when you’re settled into your career – even if it’s been years – you can reach out and we’ll support you with the same things as our current learners. Making a career change and need to revamp your resume? We can guide you. Have general career advice or questions about your industry? Our experts are ready to help. We are your ultimate career support, here to lead you in the right direction.

Practicum Coordination and Support

Here’s how we can help you find a meaningful practicum that gives you excellent hands-on experience.

Practicum Placement Research

As a Robertson learner, you’ll go on an industry practicum at a real workplace where you’ll gain hands-on skills. And we can help find the perfect placement for you.

Your practicum is jointly procured, meaning we’ll help you look for organizations that match your goals and interests as well as help you reach out to coordinate your practicum. Ultimately, you get a say in where you go for your work experience. Aside from learners in the School of Health (who have their placements chosen for them), you’ll get to choose where you go.

Industry Connections

At Robertson, we have many industry connections and industry partners and these relationships often benefit our students. Sometimes organizations reach out with positions for learners and we can pass those on, sometimes even coordinate interviews! We’re grateful we can leverage our industry connections to create career development workshops and community mixers that in turn, create relationships for our learners (more on that shortly).

Networking and Community Connections

Networking is such an important part of your career toolkit. Here’s how we can help you make meaningful connections.

Networking Events

Our team coordinates a variety of networking events to facilitate meaningful connections between our industry partners and our learners. Check them out!

  • Community Mixers. At Community Mixers, organizations give presentations and offer advice to learners who will be entering the workforce. The spokesperson will talk about their organization, describe the roles they offer and provide information on how to apply. There’s also typically a Q&A and once it’s done, everyone can network with other industry professionals, attendees and alumni. It’s a great opportunity to make new connections, especially before you enter the workforce.
  • Career Development Workshops. Career Development Workshops are events where industry professionals present on their expertise, accompanied by a Workforce Team member. After the presentation, attendees can participate in interactive activities, Q&A sessions and mock interviews. These are more hands-on events that give attendees the chance to learn tangible skills from industry experts.

Employer Network

At Robertson, we have an extensive employer network thanks to our industry connections. It’s these connections that help our learners find practicums, connect with future employers and learn about what they’re looking for. We are constantly building new relationships so we can help our students find meaningful work in their industry.
