Where (And What) to Eat in Winnipeg

Where to Eat in Winnipeg

Winnipeg is not only diverse in its people, but also in its food! Everywhere you turn, there’s a different restaurant, food truck or bakery with its own unique flavour and style. Whether you’re a student or a resident, we bet your budget (and your taste buds) will want to know what your dining options are.

We’ve put together a list of where and what to eat in Winnipeg so you’ll be prepped for your next Winnipeg food crawl. With the COVID-19 regulations changing rapidly, we suggest checking in with the restaurant before you dine in or order takeout.

Here’s how we’ve broken down the local spots:

$ = quick bites on a budget

$$ = modest eats

$$$ = make a night of it

Quick Bites on a Budget

$ Sargent Taco Shop – 698 Sargent Ave

For authentic, Mexican street food, look no further than Sargent Taco! Three tacos for $7.50? You can’t go wrong. Opt for pork, chorizo and mushroom tacos (only a few from their large selection) or try a Mexican bowl or poutine!

$ Massawa – 121 Osborne St

For a taste of authentic Ethiopian, visit Massawa. The best part of these dishes is you get multiple flavours in one meal. Choose from meat or vegetarian plates and classics like wots (stews) and tibs (sauteed meats). For under $10 you’ll get a hearty, delicious meal.

$ Chosabi – 100 King St

Chosabi’s take on Asian cuisine is the reason it became so popular in Winnipeg. You can now experience Chosabi at five different locations and try dishes like their signature sushi burrito, rice and poke bowls or ramen. For under $15, you’ll get a hearty lunch and a unique take on these classics!

$ De Luca’s – 950 Portage Ave

De Luca’s is the best of both worlds as the Portage shop has a grocery store and a restaurant/cafe. Choose from a selection of pastas, pizzas, soups and salads or a specialty hot drink. For $15 you can get a delicious dish and a tasty beverage – it’s the perfect lunch!

$ For something sweet, try MoNUTs Cafe – 120 Scott St

Plant-based protein donuts that are good for you? Sign us up! MoNUTs is a newly opened plant-based donut shop in Osborne. Try from the Nutty Chocolate, Mint Chocolate, Choco Coconut, Double Chocolate or Chocolate Sprinkle flavours. It’s the perfect way to indulge and feel good about it.

Modest Eats

Now you have some ideas on where to go for a quick bite to eat on a budget. Now we’ll get into some middle-of-the-road options that are tasty and won’t break the bank.

$$ The Grove Pub & Restaurant – 164 Stafford St

If you’re looking for pub food, we bet The Grove’s got what you’re looking for. Take your pick from appetizers, sarnies, burgers, mains, pizzas and desserts and try one of their house beers. You’ll get the best bang for your buck and a heaping plate of food. Most of their main plates fall within the $15 to $20 range.

$$ A Little Pizza Heaven – 120 Osborne St

A Little Pizza Heaven is known for their garlic butter-covered pizza crust. Their pizza prices vary but you have a lot of options from simple classics like pepperoni to specialty pies like caribbean jerk chicken. They also offer cauliflower crust and gluten-friendly options. Their medium pizzas start at $12 for dine in and $16 for delivery.

$$ La Fiesta Cafecito – 730 St. Anne’s Road

Come to La Fiesta Cafecito for a taste of El Salvador! Try pupusas, a thick flatbread stuffed with the filling of your choice. La Fiesta Cafecito also has burritos, quesadillas, enchiladas and salads. Most plates range between $10 to $20.

$$ Steve’s Bistro – 3123 Portage Ave

Steve’s Bistro serves a selection of Mediterranean dishes from bruschetta and Greek salad to souvlaki and paninis. Most dishes fall under $20 and you get massive plates of delicious, locally-made fresh Mediterranean food. You can sit on the patio or order your food to go!

$$ For something sweet, try Baked Expectations – 161 Osborne St

In the heart of Osborne Village, Baked Expectations is the place to satisfy your sweet tooth or grab a quick bite. Baked is known for their assortment of cakes, tortes, cheesecakes and pies. From carrot cake to strawberry cheesecake or hazelnut meringue to pavlova, there’s bound to be a sweet treat for everyone (as well as gluten-free options). If you’re looking for something savoury, choose from salads, burgers, pasta dishes and sandwiches, most under $20.

Make a Night of it

You’ve now got options for a quick lunch, snack or a meal with a bit more substance. Now if you want to go all out and have a decadent night on the town, here are some restaurants that will do the trick:

$$$ Nonsuch Brewing Co. – 125 Pacific Ave

For the time being, Nonsuch has reduced their menu for pickup but you certainly won’t be disappointed. Choose from their selection of light, dark and sour hand-crafted beers and select food items. If you’re looking to treat yourself, try their in-house charcuterie board.

$$$ Cordova Tapas & Wine – 93 Albert St

Cordova serves Spanish-style shareable tapas dishes to enjoy with your table. In the heart of the Exchange District, the restaurant has a cozy atmosphere where you can easily spend an evening trying tasty dishes and cocktails.

$$$ The Merchant Kitchen – 314 Donald St

The Merchant Kitchen menu is inspired by Latin and Asian street food and is designed to be shared at the table. You can start with wings or tempura, try a rice or noodle bowl then taste the carnitas, flank steak or scallops. Don’t forget pavlova for dessert! The Merchant Kitchen has menu items for all budgets, with smaller bites under $10 and larger plates over $40.

$$$ Pizzeria Gusto – 404 Academy Road

Pizzeria Gusto sets you up for an indulgent dining experience. Their dinner menu is inspired by Italian flavours. Start with calamari or a salad then enjoy a savory pasta dish or hand-crafted pizza. If you’re in the mood for a hearty lunch, you can also visit midday and order off the lunch menu.

$$$ For a savoury treat, order from The Cheesemongers Fromagerie – 839 Corydon Ave

The Cheesemongers Fromagerie is the place to go if you want decadent cheese, whether it’s for a special occasion or simply a night in. You can order from a variety of grab bags, cheese boards and gift boxes.
